Health Conversion Foundations
DVG is proud to convene a new affinity group within
its membership designed specifically for networking
and information sharing among representatives from
Health Conversion Foundations. Most of these foundations
were created through the sale of a nonprofit hospital
to a for-profit corporation, and many of the "conversion"
foundations in our region are emerging as prominent
funders in their communities. The number of health
conversion foundations in DVG's membership has tripled
in the past few years, and their leaders recognize
the value of learning from one another and tapping
into the resources that DVG can provide to build their
effectiveness as grantmakers.
In July 2002, Robert P. Haigh, President of the Lancaster
Osteopathic Health Foundation and a member of DVG's
Board of Directors, moderated the first meeting of
this group, where participants related their experiences
and began to identify common themes in their work.
Louis J. Beccaria, Ph.D., President and CEO of the
Phoenixville Community Health Foundation and an Executive
Committee member of the DVG Board of Directors, hosted
and moderated the second meeting in late September
2002. This meeting yielded exciting plans for the
future, as the attendees decided to work with DVG
to compile a summary of Community Needs Assessment
data collected by the various Health Conversion Foundations
in DVG's membership. This report will help communicate
with the new PA gubernatorial administration about
the valuable resource that these grantmakers represent
for public policy makers, specifically around community
health issues.
Additionally, DVG staff can perform quick research
in our library to provide health conversion foundation
members with information on such concerns as investment
policies and payout requirements, communications with
grantees, and board/governance issues.
If you are running a health conversion foundation
in eastern Pennsylvania and you would like to explore
